RUBY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Color
The color of Ruby ranges from a medium red,
through a brilliant red to a richer, darker red. A lighter red is classed as a
pink Sapphire. Both Ruby and Sapphire are Corundum. The rich, red color of the
Ruby is due to a very slight chromium component.
Sources
The majority of commercial production of Ruby is
from Burma, Ceylon and Madagascar. Thailand and Vietnam are also significant
sources.
Treatment
Most Ruby on the market is heat treated to enhance
it's color and clarity. This treatment is permanent and does not affect the
durability of the gemstone.
Care
Like Sapphire, Ruby, unless highly included is
very durable, but should not be subjected to extreme heat such as from a
soldering torch which could cause the stone to change color. Extreme heat
would probably crack highly included Rubies. Ultrasonic or steam cleaning is
usually safe .

Lore
The "Black Prince's Ruby" of the British Crown
Jewels was historically thought to be one of the largest and finest of Rubies
in existence. It has, however, since been proven to be not a Ruby at all but a Spinel.
Uses
Ruby is extremely durable and is suitable for any
type of jewelry
Value
Fine, vibrant red Rubies free of visible
inclusions and over a half carat in size are relatively scarce and quite
expensive.
