AMETHYST ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Color
The color of Amethyst ranges from pale, almost
colorless, to a rich, dark purple.
A rich purple with a red overtone is
often referred to as Siberian Amethyst.
Sources
Amethyst is found n most countries, but the
majority of commercial production is from Brazil. Other good sources are
Uruguay and Africa.
Treatment
Amethyst is usually not treated or enhanced. There
is, however, a large quantity of synthetic
(FAQ # 8) Amethyst on
the market, which we rigorously avoid.
Care
Amethyst is durable but should not be subjected to
high heat such as from a soldering torch which would cause the stone to crack
or lose color. Ultrasonic cleaning is usually safe but steam cleaning could be
risky. Hydofluoric acid and alkalies can attack any quartz gem.
Lore
It is said that wearing Amethyst can keep one from
getting drunk on wine (we do not vouch for this property).
Uses
Amethyst is durable enough for both men's and
ladies rings, pendants and earrings. Catholic Bishops often wear rings
containing fine, large Amethysts.
Value
Amethyst is relatively plentiful and moderately
priced. Siberian Amethyst (marked with an * in the Amethyst tables) is more
scarce and commands a significantly higher price.
