ALMANDINE / RHODOLITE ADDITIONAL
INFORMATION
Color
The color of Almandine ranges from a dark brownish
to dark purplish red. Rhodolite has the same range of colors but is usually
not as dark and exhibits more transparency.
Inclusions
Since Almandine crystals are one of the few
materials that can grow in solid rock most of the Almandine is highly
included. Only a small percentage of that which is mined has sufficient
clarity to be cut into gemstones. Rhodolite crystals, on the other hand have
fewer inclusions and have much more transparency.
Sources
Most Almandine on the market is mined and cut in
India. Most of the Rhodolite material comes from Africa.
Treatment
Neither of these Garnets are treated.
Care
All Garnets are heat sensitive so a steam cleaner
should not be used. Ultrasonic cleaners are usually safe.
Uses
The hardness and durability of both of these
Garnets make them suitable for all types of jewelry. The transparency and high
refractive index of Rhodolite gives this stone its brilliance and
scintillation.
Value
Almandine Garnet is the most common member of the
Garnet Group. It is also the most reasonably priced. Rhodolite Garnets, which
are less common and are brighter and more clear are at least 50% higher in
price.
